Glossary
Air Handler: A generic name for a device consisting of a blower and a finned-tube heat exchanger. It is used to either heat or cool the air passing through it based on the temperature of the fluid circulating through the tubes of the heat exchanger.

Aquastat: A device that senses the temperature of a liquid at some point in a system, and opens or closes electrical contacts based on that temperature and the aquastat’s setpoint temperature.

BackFlow Preventer: A specialized piping component that contains the functional equivalent of two check valves and a vent port. It prevents any fluid from a hydronic system from flowing backward and contaminating fresh water.

Ball Valve: A valve containing a rotating ball with a machined hole through it. It can be used for component isolation or limited regulation.

Boiler: A gas, oil, propane, or solid-fuel burning appliance that produces hot water or steam which is circulated through pipes to radiating devices in the room.

Btu: Abbreviation for “British Thermal Unit,” the amount of energy required to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

Bushel: A form of measurement for items like grain and corn. One bushel is equal to 56 pounds.

Circulator: A device that creates fluid motion in a hydronic system by adding mechanical energy to the fluid.

Convection: A means by which heat is transferred between a solid surface and a fluid such as air and water.

DOE: Department of Energy

Domestic Hot Water (DHW): Heated water used for purposes of washing, cooking, or other uses. Domestic hot water is considered suitable for human consumption.

Heat Exchanger: Tubes inside the boiler that transfer heat from the burning fuel to the boiler water.

Indirect Water Heater: An insulated storage tank that contains an internal heat exchanger for heating the domestic hot water in the tank.

Mixing Valve: A valve that blends two fluid streams entering at different temperatures to achieve a desired outlet temperature.

MMBtu: An abbreviation for one million Btus.

Pex Tubing: An acronym for cross-linked polyethylene tubing.

PSI: Pound per Square Inch.

Room Thermostat: An adjustable, temperature-operated switch, mounted in a room, that turns heat delivery on and off to regulate room temperature.

Setpoint Temperature: A desired temperature that is to be maintained if possible, and is set on some type of control such as a thermostat.

Ton: A unit of measurement. One ton is equal to 2000 pounds.

Zone Valve: Electrically operated valves used to allow or prevent the flow of hot water from a heat source through individual zone distribution circuits.

Zoning: Dividing a hydronic distribution system into two or more independently controlled distribution circuits.
